‘Earth from space'

This year’s installation at City Hall is inspired by SNSAs curated reference library of large scale events, scientific imagery and photography of extreme phenomena in the cosmos.

SPACE is a projection mapped art installation designed and produced by Andreas Skärberg and PXLFLD on commission by the Nobel Week Lights Festival, Stockholm City Hall 5-13 December 2020.

The artwork is inspired by scientific reference material generously provided by Swedish National Space Agency and European Space Agency and is a tribute to all the amazing advancements within space physics field that The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded through the years.

This project was designed and programmed by PXLFLD Lighting Designer Nikolaj Brink. Content and additional video design by our in-house studio.

The event was held under strict secrecy. Tickets could only be attained by completing a specific task in a scavenger hunt-like fashion to help with the party.

Fans picked assignments from a list and if they could deliver it on time; tickets were given in exchange.

The exact location and scope of the event was kept a secret until the guests were practically outside Nobis Hotel in central Stockholm.

The stage was constructed in the middle of Nobis Hotel grand lobby.
In order to keep social distancing protocols the audience enjoyed the concert from the comfort of their own dedicated hotel room looking down at the performance. In addition; a multi-camera production was broadcast to the hotel room TV-sets.

TECHNICAL SOLUTION
Due to the unorthodox audience placement and open nature of the stage setup, we opted for a LED floor under the plexi-stage deck and projector clusters (4 x Barco HDX-4K20 and 2 x Barco UDX-4K40) aligned to the outer platform in order to maximize coverage and impact.

The play-out solution was based around two Hippotizer Boreal mediaservers set up to handle the large 8K-projection canvas and an additional AMBA+ for the LED floor.

The entire show was controlled on a GrandMA3 Light console.

MANet was the general control protocol and ArtNet was used to pixelmap the 48 Astera AX1 PixelTube fixtures.

General load-in started at midnight, installation and alignment throughout the night, followed by final programming adjustments and rehearsals before showtime in the evening.

The nature of the venue and event forced the entire crew to be very effective; creative impact, time and logistics were top of mind.

The hotel room lighting (Astera AX1, AX3 and AX5) was prepared the day before.

Video Design, content and media server programming for Andrew Staples 2020 streaming adaptation of ‘Don Giovanni‘ at Berwaldhallen, Stockholm.

The cast featured Peter Mattei, Malin Byström, Andrew Staples and other world-famous soloists. The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and members of the Swedish Radio Choir was conducted by music director Daniel Hardin.

PXLFLD provided concept development, visual design and production along side technical solution, media servers and creative programming.

Acclaimed choreographer and dancer Fredrik Rydman's reimagination of Stravinsky's classic Rites Of Spring premiered at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm Sweden on September 7th and played to sold out houses throughout 2018.

Act 1 features a massive ABB industrial robot, live position tracking, moving 3d-projection mapping and multiple mirror screens.

A custom tracking solution was developed and optimised in tight relationship with the amazing engineers and programmers at Robotdalen.

We opted to use on Hippotizer Boreal to handle media playback, live positioning and 3D mapping.
The excellent integration between Maxon Cinema 4D and Hippotizer Shape was a huge factor early on in the design process. Green Hippo always delivers on reliability, support incorporated a lot of our project specific feature requests along the way.

This project has been really close to our hearts from day one and the response from critics, colleagues and audience members has been fantastic.

Guldägget was first arranged in 1961 and is Sweden’s oldest, largest and most prestigious competition for the communication industry.

For the 2020 edition we assisted Nine Yards and KOMM to re-imagine the concept to suit the new broadcast format and streaming platform.

During the IBU Biathlon World Championships in Östersund PXLFLD tranformed the Town Hall building into a fully projection mapped stage for the live broadcast medal ceremonies. The grand opening set the tone for the event with dynamic custom content that culminated in the evocative performance of “The Sound of Jämtand” featuring a choir of 700 people.

The West End hit Return to the Forbidden Planet won an Olivier Award for Best New Musical (1989). It is inspired by the cult science fiction film Forbidden Planet from 1956 and plays by Shakespeare, especially The Tempest.

LIFE consists of 200 square feet custom curved projection wall, floating platforms, automation, pyrotechnics, custom content, a full symphonic score and rock solid playback from three synchronized Green Hippo mediaservers and Barco 40k projectors.

LIFE received the international Brass Ring Awards ”Live entertainment excellence, best overall production” in Orlando, Florida 2015. The show was in great company by other nominated productions in the same category from Disneyland, Ferrari World, Universal Studios and Six Flags.
